Frequently Asked Questions

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders. It emphasizes the body’s ability to heal itself and uses techniques like stretching, massage, and joint manipulation to improve mobility, relieve pain, and support overall health.

How is an Osteopath different from a physiotherapist or chiropractor?

While there is a lot of overlap, and all typically use hands-on therapy, osteopaths take a more holistic approach to healthcare, considering how the body’s systems interconnect. Chiropractors typically mainly focus on spinal adjustments, and physiotherapists typically concentrate more on rehabilitation exercises. Osteopaths combine hands-on treatment with advice on posture, lifestyle, and rehabilitation exercise to promote long-term health.

What conditions can Osteopathy help with?

Osteopathy can help with a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to:
Back and neck pain
Joint and muscle pain
Headaches and migraines
Sports injuries
Postural problems
Sciatica
Arthritis-related discomfort

Is Osteopathic treatment safe?

Yes, osteopathic treatment is safe when provided by a qualified and registered osteopath. Your osteopath will take a full medical history and conduct a physical assessment before starting any  treatment to ensure it is appropriate and safe for your condition.

What should I expect during my first visit?

During your first appointment, the osteopath will ask about your medical history, lifestyle, and symptoms. They will then perform a physical examination, which may include checking your posture and movement. Treatment may begin on the first visit and will be tailored to your specific needs.

Do I need a referral from my GP to see an Osteopath?

No, a referral is not necessary. You can book an appointment directly. However, if you are suffering from a chronic musculoskeletal condition (lasting six months or more), such as ongoing back pain, arthritis, or joint issues, you may qualify for an EPC/Chronic Disease Management Plan through your GP. This plan allows you to receive Medicare-subsidised osteopathic treatment as part of a coordinated care approach.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments depends on your condition, how long you’ve had it, and how your body responds to treatment. Some people feel significant improvement after one or two sessions, while others may require longer management plans.

Is Osteopathic treatment covered by health insurance?

Most private health insurance plans cover osteopathic treatment, with varying degrees of coverage. It’s important to check with your provider to confirm what is covered under your policy.
